Los Angeles County Community Well-Being

Suzanne Scott, Board Member

No matter their circumstances, every family should feel supported in caring for their children. When families get the support they need, when they need it, they’re better able to raise healthy young adults with a chance to succeed.

About this Initiative

To bring about the systems change needed to improve access to resources and change lives, we work through funder collaboratives and strategic partnerships. We emphasize flexibility, knowledge-sharing, humility, and listening in our grantmaking.

In systems change at the scale of public institutions, family foundations can play an important role in creating and sharing knowledge, funding pilot programs, gathering data on program effectiveness, and convening stakeholders. That is the role we seek to play.

We seek to align and partner with nonprofits working in child welfare, government agencies, schools, social workers, legal advocacy organizations, community institutions, and other stakeholders.

The Goal

Working with fellow organizations and institutions, we aim to provide more support to underprivileged children in LA County. Foster children in particular are often underserved and at risk for neglect.

Often, underprivileged children and their families are not aware of the health, education, housing, and other resources available to them through public agencies and nonprofit programs. By making it easier for underprivileged families to access these resources, we hope to improve a variety of outcomes over a lifetime, such as:

  • Preventing involvement with the juvenile probation system.
  • Reducing homelessness, drug abuse and teen pregnancy.
  • Minimizing health risks, and supporting better mental health.
  • Empowering success in education.
  • Entering adulthood equipped for work and family life, with the confidence to flourish over a lifetime.
